Adobe Reader 8 eating CPU usage
I've just installed the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader and was shocked by the CPU usage of the updater process. Every time the Adobe Updater starts my laptop is just not usable any more. It's not even possible to kill the process in my case or just logout and login. I have to perform a full restart to kill the process and to get back to a normal state. What's even worst is that there is no bug fix or support for that problem from Adobe although the problem is known since the beginning of the year. In my case I could solve the problem in prohibiting the internet access for the updater process through my firewall.

I suggest you find the file AbobeUpdate.dll in Program Files/Adobe/Reader 8.0/Reader
and rename it or delete it. It should fix the problem. You probably won't then be able to update it but you can't win them all.

May I point you to a fix I successfully applied: http://blog.stealthpuppy.com/deployment/disable-adobe-updater-with-adobe-customization-wizard-8
In short:
Get the Adobe Customization Wizard 8, the original setup and a transformation file from above site (or create yourself) to generate a customized setup without all the online stuff. It's easy. Try!
